Machine Learning and AI to Understand Advanced Manufacturing Physics and Chemistry

Stage: Prototype

A cross-directorate team of material scientists, chemists, and computational have used AI to understand and control, in real time, the flame spray pyrolysis process. The study, driven by machine learning and Bayesian analysis, revealed a multi-mechanism process of silica particle formation. In addition, the AI-based “intelligent software" suggested the design of a next experiment. The team is currently using AI to improve the understanding of the physics and chemistry behind the synthesis process, targeting the discovery of new phases and phenomena.
